GREEKS AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

Non-governmental organization – an organization working for a chosen interest and not operating for profit. In international law, unlike intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations group not states, but natural or legal persons, and usually from different countries.

AMURTEL- Greece maintains safe spaces for women that focus on pregnancy up to two years after giving birth. We understand that for many women in times of crisis, their concerns center on the well-being of their children and family. We also recognize that disasters can make women more susceptible to post-traumatic stress, depression or long-term shock and grief. Pregnant and postpartum women are often particularly vulnerable. AMURTEL runs a day center in central Athens and also provides services in refugee camps, shelters and local NGO facilities.

Perichoresis is a non-governmental organization based in Katerini, Greece. Perichoreza operates under the auspices of the Greek Evangelical Church, is supervised by a Board of Directors in full compliance with the regulations governing non-governmental organizations, and its aim is to provide assistance to those fleeing conflict, with priority given to vulnerable social groups in northern Greece.

Since March 2016, when thousands of refugees were stranded in Idomeni, we started relocating refugees to apartments/houses in Katerini. In total, we have served over 1,500 refugees and currently manage 110 apartments in the city of Katerini, which can accommodate 540 refugees, meeting their practical and psychosocial needs. We offer help to all refugees regardless of origin, nationality and religion.

Few Greeks are involved in non-governmental organizations. Greeks are more willing to engage in one-off charity events. The interviews show that Greeks know only a few international organizations, e.g. UNICEF. The Greeks we asked do not know the exact process of establishing an NGO. They claim that this process is time-consuming and requires a large financial outlay.
